Feeling stuck? Here are some ideas to get you started.

There are a few ways to go about this task. You can go short and sweet or long and descriptive. However you choose to write your card or note, know that your efforts will be appreciated.

Start with sympathy. Express your sorrow for their loss by saying that. "I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad, brother, mom, etc." Then use their name. This is especially important and will honor them. "Sally and her bubbly personality will really be missed."

If you want to keep going, tell a story about the person. "We will always remember the trip we took to the Grand Canyon with the two of you. That was one of the best vacations we ever had and we're so glad we are able to experience it with you!"

Still going? Find ways to appreciate that person. Everyone wants to hear how their loved one had a positive effect on others. "I always loved the way Jim was able to carry on a conversation with every new person he met. He was the friendliest guy and made everyone feel special. He was such a pleasure to be with."

One more thing? Offer to help in a tangible way. Don't make an open-ended offer because it may be difficult for the family to make decisions right now. Try something like, "We know this summer will be difficult, so Tom and I will be taking care of your yard for as long as you need."

Sending any sort of sympathy card or note shows you care about the family or person who is grieving a loss. If you're not sure what to say, simply send a short expression of sorrow for their loss and be sure to sign it.

It Can Seem Like a Daunting Task, But There is a Formula.

You can certainly write your thank you notes any way you want, but there is a bit of a formula that can make things easier. Thank you cards do not have to be long and wordy. Recipients understand that this is a difficult time for you and they don't expect to receive a thank you letter; only a note. There's no set time frame to write these, but If you can get them out within a few weeks after the funeral - this is ideal. If not, people will understand. If you need help writing them, a close friend or family member will be glad to offer assistance.

"Dear (name,)" is always a good place to start. It's not too formal or casual, and it fits every occasion.

Next, thank the recipient for their condolences, gift, flowers, attendance, prayers, or however they supported you. Some examples include:

For prayers:

“Thank you so much for thinking of us during such a difficult time. Your prayers were really comforting when I need them most.”

For a gift or monetary donation to the family:

"Thank you so much for your generosity. It has not gone unnoticed by our family and we are blessed to know you."

For help in planning the funeral:

"Thank you for making a difficult day easier for us. Your support and assistance were truly appreciated, and with your help, the burden was lifted off our shoulders."

For attending the funeral:

"Thank you for coming to mom's funeral. It would have meant the world to her and we loved hearing the stories you shared. Thank you for your support."

For a flower donation:

Who Qualifies For Burial Benefits And Burial In a National Cemetery?

Veterans, service members, spouses, and dependents may be eligible for burial in a VA national cemetery, as well as other benefits, if they meet one of the requirements listed below:

A veteran who didn’t receive a dishonorable discharge
A service member who died while on active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty for training
The spouse or minor child of a veteran, even if the veteran died first
In some cases, the unmarried adult dependent child of a veteran

What Are Burial Benefits and How Do I Apply?

The veterans death benefits may help cover the burial, funeral, and transportation costs associated with the deceased’s services and disposition. Veterans being buried in a national cemetery would receive assistance with monument or marker, and the plot or internment.

A copy of the veteran's discharge papers (DD214) must be provided to the funeral home to receive benefits. To request a copy of your discharge papers, click HERE.

You must file a claim for a non-service-connected burial allowance within two years after the veteran’s burial or cremation. There is no time limit to file for a service-connected burial, plot or interment allowance.

How Do I Return to Work After a Loss?

I Don't Know How I'll Even Get Through One Day.

Going back to work after a loss will be difficult on you and your coworkers. Some won't know how to connect with you in your new emotional world and others may not care. But you cannot ignore your emotional needs. You have to take care of yourself in order to heal.

First of all, don’t try to go back before you’re ready. Bereavement leave is often not very generous, so if you’re able to take some holiday leave too, don’t be afraid to do it. Or even take some unpaid leave if you’re in the fortunate position to be able to do that.

Talk to your boss before going back so that they know how you are and what your challenges may be. Perhaps ask for simpler duties or more support for a while until you are back on your feet. This is especially important if you have a job where mistakes could create a risk for you or other people.

Bring your loved one’s photo to work and place it in your space.

Don’t beat yourself up too much if you lose concentration or make a mistake. How many people do you know who work at 100% efficiency all the time. Cut yourself some slack.

Ask for help if you need it. Everyone will understand your emotional limitations.

Have a few answers ready for what you will say when people ask you about what happened. Keep it simple and don’t go into too much detail unless you are especially close to someone at work. Set boundaries as to how much you want to share and who you’ll share with.

Set aside some time each day for grieving. Let yourself have a good cry in the car before you go in or at lunchtime, so you’ll feel more in control the rest of the day.

Know that the weird feeling of being different and that everything has changed will gradually wear off as you come to terms with your new normal and learn to live with it.

Work some self-care time into your schedule. Meet a friend, have hot bubble baths, do some exercise or meditation. Watch a film or your favourite TV programme and eat your favourite food. Grieving is tough work and you need some ‘me’ time.

Recognize that you’re doing your best at any one moment. Your co-workers will understand if you aren’t performing up to your pre-loss standards. Give yourself plenty of time to get back into the groove.

Where in Minnesota Can We Store or Scatter Ashes After Cremation?

In our state, there are no specific laws as to where you must keep or scatter cremated remains, so there are many options. You can keep them in a container at home or in a cemetery grave or niche. If you choose to scatter ashes, which are considered non-hazardous, be courteous and do so at a time and in a location that is not overly populated, as this can be a sensitive issue to many.

What Are Some Options for Scattering Ashes?

In a Cemetery

Cremation and Scattering Gardens are located at many cemeteries and are designated areas for scattering ashes. Contact your cemetery to find out if such a garden is available.

On Private Property

There are no state laws prohibiting the dispersal of ashes on private property as long as the landowner has given permission.

On Public Land

Native American burial grounds are protected land and cannot be disturbed, but otherwise, ashes can be scattered on local public land, such as in a city park. You may want to confirm this with your local government beforehand.

On Federal Land

This can be tricky, as some National Parks require a permit and others do not. The rules of each park differ, so check the regulations of your desired location to be sure. Generally, it seems as though small ceremonies are acceptable if they stay away from high traffic areas, are not visible to other visitors, and leave no markers or memorials.

In The Water

In greater Minnesota, you can scatter ashes in area ponds, lakes, and rivers. However, there are five National Parks in this state, and for the waters in that Federal parkland, different rules apply (see above.) Scattering ashes at sea is legal, but there is a requirement by the EPA that ashes must be dropped at least 3 miles from shore, and notification must be given at least 30 days prior.

By Air

Minnesota has no restrictions for scattering ashes by air other than removing the ashes from the container, as that may pose a hazard or risk to people or property on the ground.

If you're struggling with whether or not to go to a funeral, the right answer will almost always be yes. Unless you're ill, have incredibly complicated family dynamics, or there's a dangerous weather situation standing in the way, you'll rarely regret your decision to attend. Funerals support the family members of the deceased, provide closure, and allow the community to pay their respects. Funerals are for the living, and here are some reasons you should consider attending that funeral that you just cannot commit to:

That person's life mattered and they were loved. Show up and let the family know you were one of the people who agreed with that.

2. By being present, the family will know you care about them. Simply showing up is a gift.

3. You may not even consider that you're grieving, and by attending the funeral, you're healing. It's for you too.

4. Every funeral is different and you may actually enjoy it. Some funerals are incredibly sad and others are celebrations of life. Give it a chance.

5. One reason you don't want to go is because you are avoiding the inevitable in having to think about your own mortality. But you may get some inspiration to plan your own funeral by attending this one.

6. Put the family first. They need their friends in their time of need. Are you a true friend? Can you see outside yourself and your own needs? Yes you can, because they would do the same for you.

7. It will feel wonderful for the family members of the deceased to be surrounded by people who care and made such an effort to be there. You will feel equally wonderful to be a part of that group.

8. Even if you may not say it as eloquently, when you show up to a funeral, you are telling the family that you acknowledge their pain, their loss, and the importance of their loved one.

9. If you think your presence won't matter, you can never have enough support in times like these. Unless it's a private service, everyone is invited to a funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life.

10. Ultimately, if you're on the fence - go. If you have been estranged for a while - go. If you've never even met - you can still go. The family will be grateful you were thinking of them.

What Should I Do When I See a Funeral Procession Pass By?

Most of us have seen a funeral procession of cars going down the street. Typically it begins with a lead car, followed by a hearse, then vehicles containing family members of the deceased and any other relatives or mourners who are invited to accompany the family to the cemetery for the burial. All vehicles probably had their headlights on.

But how should the public react to the procession?

If you’re in your car, Minnesota law generally requires all vehicles, except emergency vehicles, to yield the right-of-way to a funeral procession when all its cars are in close formation with their headlights on. Drivers should safely move to the right and stop, or proceed through an intersection before stopping and remaining stopped until the procession passes.

If you’re walking on the sidewalk, it’s courteous to stop and remove your hat, or at least stop and respectfully recognize the procession, rather than ignore or simply stare at it.

A funeral procession is a final, organized farewell to the deceased. It's a structured process for the community to recognize that a member of their own has passed and a way for individuals to say goodbye and acknowledge the finality of death.

What's the Difference Between an Obituary and a Eulogy?

I've Been Asked to Give the Eulogy. Do I Just Copy the Obituary?

An obituary announces a death, lists some events of the deceased’s life, and provides details about the upcoming funeral or memorial service. Obituaries are typically found in newspapers or online, and they are relatively structured. The deceased’s name, date of birth and death are listed first. Also included is a list of those who are survived by the deceased. Following this, the family typically includes major details from their life, including their education, family, children, career and more. The obituary ends with details of the funeral or memorial date and location, as well as any additional details, like a request for donations or no flowers. Other details may be added at the family’s discretion, but most obituaries follow this basic template.

A eulogy is a speech given to honor the life of the deceased, given usually at the funeral or memorial service. A family member or friend typically delivers the eulogy, as they had a personal relationship with the deceased and knew them well. Eulogies tend to be about remembering the legacy of the deceased and celebrating their life. 10 minutes is a good length of time for a eulogy; any longer than that and guests may find their attention wandering. There’s no template or order to a eulogy, and they are meant to be positive and used to remember the deceased in the best light. Any duplication of facts expressed in the obituary can usually be avoided, as most guests have already read it and usually don’t need those facts repeated. The deceased’s memory and best attributes are celebrated in the eulogy.

Funeral Etiquette: What to Do and What Not to Do

Going to Your First Funeral? Here Are Some Helpful Tips.

Whether it's a funeral, memorial service, or celebration of life held at a church, funeral home, or other location, the same advice generally applies. Here are some guidelines that can safely carry you through these sensitive, emotional situations.

DO's

Arrive at least 15 minutes early so you can sign in as a guest and greet the family. If you miss them before the service due to the size of the crowd, be sure to find the family afterward to express your sympathy.
Enter quietly. This event is not about you.
Express your condolences. "I'm so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers." Tell the family your connection to the deceased and a short, positive story if you think it's warranted.
Silence your phone, or even better - leave it in the car.
Wear appropriate, traditional clothing. You don't have to wear black unless that's what the family has requested. Casual clothing should be avoided unless it's requested by the family. Show respect to the family in all aspects of your presence.
Participate in all religious customs to the best of your ability. It's disrespectful to do otherwise. Sing, sit, and stand when asked to do so.
Assist the family when asked, unless it's impossible or your nerves prevent you from doing so. If they request that you take a role in the service or they need help bringing food or flowers to their home after the funeral, offer your services. Funerals can be overwhelming and extra hands are often needed.

DON'Ts

Be late. Entering after the funeral or service has begun is in bad taste. If you do arrive late, enter from a side aisle; not down the middle.
Sit in the front rows. These are typically reserved for immediate family and close friends.
Show up under the influence.
Draw attention to yourself before, during, or after the celebration.
Make jokes or speak ill of the deceased. This event is to honor their memory.
Discuss politics or other sensitive topics.
If you're bringing children with you, don't let them run wild. Explain the situation in age-appropriate terms and keep them close. Step out of the funeral or service if they become disruptive.
Take photos during the funeral.

VIEWING THE BODY

If the deceased has not been cremated, there may be an opportunity to view the deceased in the casket. Whether or not you choose to do this is your decision. Some people find that it helps them acknowledge the loss and allows them to begin the grieving process, and others find it upsetting. Viewing the deceased is not required and you can politely decline the invitation if the family extends it.

Planning a Visit? Here's What You Should Know.

It can be difficult to visit someone receiving hospice care, but there are ways to prepare for a smooth experience.

First, don't arrive unannounced. There may be scheduled visitors or medical routines in place that you do not want to interrupt, so always call ahead and make sure the family offers you an invitation to visit. Once you have been invited, consider the following:

Preparation

Ask for a time frame. Hospice patients may sleep a lot. Work within the family's timing and respect the patient's energy level.
Only bring invited guests. Children have great energy, but it can be overwhelming to some patients.
Offer to run errands and pick up any supplies or food for the family on your way over.
If you have any special items that the patient loves, such as a blanket, music, or photos they may be interested in seeing or talking about, bring them along.

During the Visit

Sit, don't stand. Be at eye-level and make eye contact.
Read the room and decide whether or not you need to fill the space with conversation. If the patient is sleeping the entire time, it's OK to just be present.
If they want to speak, let them. Listening is a great skill to have.
If you sense they want conversation, join in. Let them lead the conversation and follow it.
Be prepared for many emotions. It's possible they may express a wide range.
Show your support through touch; gentle hand-holding and hugs may be just what is needed at this time.
Share memories about good times and experiences you shared together. Connect with laughs and jokes if you feel the patient is in the same frame of mind.
Watch for signs of exhaustion and prepare to leave when the family signals. Don't overstay your welcome.

After the Visit

Keep in touch with the family. Call, email or text. Things may happen quickly and your support is crucial.
Keep offering your assistance with errands, housekeeping, pet sitting, etc.
Even if you don't have the perfect words, your compassion and contact matter.

The bottom line is, let the patient be your guide. You may show up ready for a deep conversation with your friend or loved one, only to find them sleeping soundly. You may feel as though the gift you brought went unnoticed and you left after 15 minutes. But remember - this isn't about you. The family will be forever grateful that you came to visit and showed your love and support.

Now don't forget to take care of yourself after the visit. Your emotions will come into play too. Just wait.

5 Texts to Send to a Grieving Friend This Father's Day

Because Hearing From Family and Friends on Holidays is Incredibly Important.

Texting is easy and fast, but text messages carry a ton of meaning. Don't underestimate how important those little words will mean to your friends who are still riding that roller coaster of grief. No matter how long it's been since the death of their husband, father, grandfather, or father figure, your message will still mean the world to them!

These Father's Day messages are all sent with one intention: you don't need them to reply. You are sending love and support on a day that is full of memories. Open-ended questions like, "How are you?" will not serve them well on such an occasion. Send statements that don't require answers. If they choose to reply - great. But don't expect a reply and don't be upset if you don't receive one. This day is about their grief and hopefully- their healing. The face that you are reaching out is the point.

Here's are some examples that you can tailor to your friends and their loved ones. We don't get to judge other people's grief. Whether they lost fathers or father figures; if they are fathers who lost children or children who lost fathers; if they were dog dads or cat dads; if they always wanted to be fathers but couldn't for one reason or another... Grief is grief.

"Just checking in, Kevin. We know today is going to be really tough, so please know we're thinking of you and we love you."
"Hi Barb. Jenny and I are wearing our yellow shirts today in honor of your dad. We know it was his favorite color and we wanted you to know we remembered. He was the best!"
Dearest Cory, we weren't able to meet your uncle, but we know you loved him and hold him dear. We're praying for you today."

In any text you send, be sure to use the name of the deceased, as your friend may miss seeing their name and reading it. You also may want to include a photo of their loved one if you have one.
